Eridian steel

Eridian steel is a metal alloy created by the Eridians, a material distinct from the more famous xenonite. Rocky, the sole surviving Eridian engineer, used it to solve critical engineering problems aboard the Hail Mary, and it became the container of choice for the Taumoeba samples that would save two worlds.

Composition and Properties

Eridian steel is not a single refined alloy but a practical mishmash of metals. When Rocky needed to build replacement fuel bays for the Hail Mary, he melted down non-critical structural components from his own ship, the Blip-A, and combined them into a single alloy. The resulting material is mostly iron but contains at least twenty different elements, a mixture Rocky himself could not precisely identify, calling it simply "metal stew." Despite its improvised origin, the alloy is extremely strong and durable. It does not oxidize easily, and it is much harder than any metal alloy humans had produced. However, unlike xenonite, it is not harder than diamond-cutting tools, meaning Earth scientists could cut it open with a diamond saw for analysis.

Use in Fuel Bay Construction

After the Taumoeba contamination destroyed much of the Hail Mary's fuel, Grace faced a critical shortage of fuel storage capacity. The original aluminum fuel bays were designed for a suicide mission, and three of the nine had been lost or jettisoned. Rocky solved the problem by fabricating three perfect replacement bays from Eridian steel. He analyzed one of Grace's original bays, then used his hull robot to measure every valve connection, screw threading, and mounting point. The copies were dimensionally identical to the originals, though made of the different alloy. The fuel bays did not need to hold pressure, only to contain the Astrophage fuel aboard the ship, and they had to be strong enough not to break apart under the ship's acceleration. Rocky's steel bays were more than adequate for this task, and they actually had slightly more internal volume than the originals, allowing the Hail Mary to carry 200,000 kilograms more fuel than when it left Earth.

Use in Taumoeba Mini-Farms

When Grace and Rocky discovered that the nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba-82.5 could slowly work its way through xenonite, they needed a new container material for the samples that would save Earth and Erid. Rocky chose Eridian steel for the mini-farms, the small capsules that would be attached to the beetles and sent back to Earth. Each mini-farm was a sealed steel capsule, about the size of a hand, containing a colony of Taumoeba in a Venus-like atmosphere. The steel was chosen because it could be completely sealed, preventing any air leakage that might suffocate the microbes over the years-long journey. The mini-farms were hermetically sealed, and Grace tested them thoroughly, confirming that Taumoeba could not escape through the steel. The beetles carrying these steel mini-farms were launched toward Earth, carrying the solution to the Astrophage crisis.

Narrative Significance

Eridian steel represents the practical, improvisational engineering that characterizes Rocky's approach to problem-solving. Unlike xenonite, which is a sophisticated technological material requiring precise chemical formulation, Eridian steel is a salvage material, repurposed from whatever was available. It embodies the Eridians' ability to make do with limited resources, a trait that proved essential when the more advanced xenonite failed. The steel also serves as a bridge between Eridian and human technology: it is strong enough for space travel but accessible enough for Earth scientists to study and potentially replicate. In the end, it is this humble alloy, not the miraculous xenonite, that carries the salvation of Earth across interstellar space.
